Upcoming Classes and Events

Introduction to Spinning Class, Saturday, June 6, from 9 am to 5 pm

In the Introduction to Spinning class, you will gain basic spinning skills so that you can start to make your own yarn. We will cover a variety of topics, including: selecting fiber to spin for your project; types of twist; different “draw” methods to get the type of yarn you want; ways to ply single yarns, and yarn finishing techniques.

The cost is $125 for members and $135 for nonmembers. This includes the class fee, 1.5 lbs spinning fiber, a spinner control card, and a basic niddy-noddy. Please bring a spinning wheel if you have one. But don’t worry if you don’t! Members can rent one of the Guild’s spinning wheels to practice, or you can buy a drop spindle for $25 (details in the registration form).

Register soon! The deadline for registration is class June 1 and is limited to the first 3 people.

Please fill out the Introduction to Spinning Registration Form at https://forms.gle/2hiBDqvc7wCoUuVv9 to enroll. If you have any questions, please email srfiberartists@gmail.com

Recent Classes and Events

May 15th or 16th- My first Weaving Project Class

On May 16th Terry Byers taught a “First Project” class, where participants learned how to design a dishtowel, figure materials needed and weaving hints that will help participants get started on your first project.

Snake River Homestead Demonstrations

During the week of May, 11, members of the Guild had the opportunity to participate in the 4th grade school visits to the Snake River Homestead, in Shelly. They showed the students how wool was processed to get it ready to spin, why people spun fiber in to yarn, and demonstrated spinning. A few students even got to try their hands at spinning on 2 of the Guild’s spinning wheels.

Knitting 101: Beginning Knitting

This class introduced class members to knitting, and covered knit and purl stitches; casting on and binding off; online resources such as Ravelry; how to select yarns; lifelines; and burying yarn ends.

Frantic Finish Open House

With the holidays approaching, we decided it was time for an open house. We chose a theme of finishing up projects to be used as decoration or gifts (although attendees were welcome to work on whatever they liked). We had raffle prizes throughout the day, and funny certificates for those who attended. The studio looked spiffy, there was good food, and great company throughout the day!

Scandinavian Star Workshop

Nothing else quite makes a house feel cozy like Scandinavian stars. In early December, class members of the Scandinavian Star Workshop got busy making them using basket reed. Some were with only the natural color reed, while others had dyed reed accents.

Tour de Fleece YARNO Potluck

During the Tour de Fleece in June and July 2025, the Weaving, Spinning, & Fiber Arts Guild of Idaho Falls had a competition with The Portneuf Yarn Makers in Pocatello to see who could get the most “YARNO” (bingo) cards completely filled. The team who had the most card blackouts would be hosted by the other team. When the results came in, Portneuf had won! Spinners from both groups gathered in a park shelter in Blackfoot for a day of spinning, eating delicious pot luck dishes, and participating in an hourly give-away of items that participants had brought. It was great to come together as spinners and enjoy a day of comradery and fun!
